Sphynx cat in a pink heart frame

Colour · Flash

A coloured pencil drawing of a hairless sphynx cat's face, with pale blue eyes and a pink nose, centred inside a heart-shaped frame. The cat's ears and forehead carry fine pink paisley and dotted patterns, and the frame is a band of pink lace-like ornament. The soft pastel background and pale grey paper give the composition a light, open feel.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Nan bought the cat off a man at Hull market for the price of two pasties, and she called him Lucifer because he had no hair and no manners. By the second week of the season he had a velvet cushion the colour of raspberry sherbet at the back of the palmistry tent, and a heart-shaped frame of tin lace hung over the entrance so customers would think about love before they thought about money.

Every Friday she painted him again. A sable brush, a saucer of pink gouache, swirls over his ears and a little heart on his brow, because the punters wanted luck and the cat wanted to be looked at. He tolerated it the way he tolerated everything, staring out with those pale blue eyes as if he had already read our futures and found them tedious. Children pressed their faces to the canvas flap to see him. Lads from the rides dared each other to stroke him and came away with scratches and grins.

The fair pulled up its pegs in a field outside Beverley on the last Sunday of October. Nan had gone to bed early with her hip, and the wind was coming off the Wolds like a blade. I took the frame down and wrapped it in an old bedsheet, then turned round to find the cat already sitting inside the empty heart of it, paws tucked under, pink dots fresh on his forehead, as though he had been waiting to be packed.

I drove the van slowly through the dark with the frame rattling in the back. Every few miles I checked the mirror, and there he was in the lamplight, framed in pink, watching the road behind us as if he expected someone to come running after.
