Only the rose is left. I meant to paint over that too, but when I went to cover the chimney breast I found Dad's pencil lines underneath, the small grey rose he drew in the corner of every invoice he ever sent. I put the roller down and didn't pick it up again. For three evenings I've been at it with a sable brush and a jar of grey wash, bringing the petals up soft, one at a time, so the flower sits in the black like a moon behind cloud.

Mrs Dhillon from next door left a casserole on the step with a note that said only, Are you sleeping? I am, as it happens, for the first time since March. I lie on the rug with the lamp off and can't tell where the walls stop and the dark starts, and the rose glows faintly just above me like it's keeping watch.

Come down at Easter. Bring the good thermos and your reading glasses. You can have the armchair, but mind the mantel, the rose isn't properly dry yet. Love, Pip.
