The big top came down at Maidstone on Tuesday, and I have been sitting in the wagon with the canvas smell in my coat ever since. Mr Sallow sold the elephant to a farm near Ashford for less than its feed cost, and the band has gone to the Co-op work it always swore it would never take. Only the wardrobe is left, and me, sorting it into tea chests for a man from the auction house who keeps calling the sequins trinkets.

I found the feather box under the trunk marked MADAME ORLA. Forty years of ostrich plumes, a few peacock eyes gone brittle as old paper, and at the bottom two long grey pinions that Orla wore on the night she slipped from the wire at Leeds and got up laughing. Nobody told me to keep them. Nobody told me to throw them away either, which is how most things in this business get decided.

So I wrapped the two feathers in lavender tissue, the way you would wrap a christening gown, and put them in my handbag. The rest went to the auction man at a shilling a box, and he did not even look up.

I am posting this with the feathers folded inside, so mind them when you open it. Orla always said a feather wants to be flying somewhere. A sister in Hull will have to do for a start.
