Fine line tattoo of two thin parallel black lines encircling the inner forearm of a person wearing a black top.

Two thin black lines around a forearm

Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A person in a loose black top is shown from the chest down, with their face out of frame. Two thin, crisp black parallel lines wrap around the forearm just above the wrist, like a narrow band. The ink is solid black with no shading or colour, and the plain dark background keeps the forearm as the clear focus.

Dear Nan, the tide has taken the lower steps again, so Dad has rigged the rope along the rail and we walk it like a bannister. You asked whether the new keeper's boy has come yet. He came on Tuesday, in the supply boat, with a sea chest and a face like wet paper. He does not talk. He counts the gulls on the wall instead, and when he has finished counting he starts again.

Yesterday I found him at the foot of the tower with a length of thin tarred cord wound twice round his left wrist, pulled tight enough to leave a pale ring. I asked what it was for. He said his mother tied it there the morning the boat left the mainland, so that he would know which hand was his to keep. I said that seemed a strange way to remember a hand. He said it was the only way he trusted.

I have decided to tell you the rest because you always said I should write things down before the sea rearranges them. The cord is gone now. He cut it off with the penknife Dad gave me, and then sat on the wet stones for an hour holding the two ends. This morning he asked me to find him a needle and a little ink. I did not ask why. We sat on the lee side of the boathouse, and I drew a single line with the nib, then a second line just beside it, and he held his arm out as steady as the lamp.

He says the band will do the job the cord did. Nobody can cut ink off with a knife. I have not told him that the sea takes everything in the end. I expect he knows already. Your loving granddaughter, Mae.
