Black band armband tattoo on forearm

Blackwork · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

The photograph shows a bare forearm against a black background, with a white shirt visible on the left. Two pairs of tattoo bands wrap fully around the arm: a thick solid black band with a thinner black line beneath it higher up, and a matching thick band with a thin line lower down near the wrist. The ink is solid black with crisp edges, and the shading is neutral skin tone with soft, even lighting.

The hall still smells of floor polish and the cabbage that was cleared away decades ago, and someone has pinned the name badges in the wrong order, so you find yourself filed under a surname you stopped using in Year Nine. Dennis Okafor spots you from the trestle table and lifts a plastic cup of wine as though he is still holding the head boy's clipboard. "You came," he says, and you are surprised by how little you want to be angry.

Thirty years ago Mr Pryce pinned the armband on Dennis at assembly, a navy band with a silver stripe, while you stood with the other prefects and watched the stripe catch the light from the high windows. Afterwards you walked home along the canal with your hands in your blazer pockets and told yourself it was only a piece of cloth. It took years to understand that a band can be a sentence someone else has written about you.

Dennis wants to talk about it now, and he does, clumsily, with one hand resting on your elbow. He says he never wanted the vote to be so close, that he has spent three decades feeling he took something from you. You think of the shop above a launderette that smelled of hot irons, where at twenty-six you had two black bands inked around your own arm: a thick one, and a thin line beneath it, so that you would never again have to wait for someone to hand you one.

You tell him it was a long time ago, and it nearly is. Then you go to find your name card, which, to your surprise, is finally in the right place.
