Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo

The photograph shows one continuous thin black line tattoo running diagonally from near the armpit down the outer arm towards the wrist. The line has a uniform weight and a slight bend at the elbow, with no shading or additional marks. The ink is black on skin tones, with a plain dark background and soft natural light.

Dear Mother, The line is finished at last. Mr Hollis and I cut it through Ashcombe Wood over nine weeks, a straight sight from the church tower at Little Dene down to the mill race at Coldharbour, and I have never seen anything so plain laid on the land. Every oak in the path we marked and felled, and the men dragged the trunks to the verge so nobody could say we had gone round anything.

At the bend, where the ground rises over the old barrow, the line would not go straight. Hollis wanted to take the ridge with spades and a boy's patience. I walked the sight three times with the theodolite, and each time the needle sat true only if we bent it a hand's width east to clear the spring. So we let it bend. Hollis grumbled that the Company would see a crooked line on the plan, but I told him the water had been there longer than the Company.

Last evening I stood at the top of the barrow and looked back down the cut. From up there it runs like a pencil stroke through all that dark green, and the bend looks like a knuckle, like something that has been shaped to fit a hand. Hollis says the brambles will close it by spring. I do not think so. Some lines the land keeps.

I'll be home by Michaelmas with my wages. Do not let Father burn the letter from Mrs Roper; I have put her good news in a separate envelope under the kitchen clock. Your loving son, Thomas
