Finger tattoos and a mandala on the hand

Fine line · Hand · Black and grey · Photo

Two hands are raised against a dark blue background, with small tattoos of keys and ornate lines on several fingers. A larger mandala design with paisley-like detailing covers the back of one hand and extends towards the wrist. The tattoos are in black ink with fine lines and some solid areas, and the composition is a close, well-lit shot of the hands and rings.

The paddle on Greymoor Lock had jammed halfway, and the narrowboat Marigold sat in the chamber with her bows nudging the bottom gate like a dog wanting out. You had the windlass in one hand and the iron ring of keys in the other, working through them by touch, because in the rain the brass ones all looked alike and the old lock-keeper had only ever marked the right one with a strip of red tape that had long since peeled away.

Nell Harrow stood on the gunwale with her arms folded, watching you the way people watch a man who has promised to be quick. You told her it was the third key, the one with the notched bit. You were guessing, and she knew it, but she only shifted her weight and said the boat would be sitting there till Easter if you kept guessing.

The fourth key turned. The gear housing clacked, the paddle lifted with a groan like an old door, and the water came through the culvert in a rope of brown light. Marigold rose slowly, paint and rivets and all, until the gate could be pushed open with one shoulder. Nell tossed you a barley sugar from her coat pocket and told you the spare key lived inside the cabin cupboard, on a nail behind the painted panel her grandfather had done, all scrolls and little looping flowers that seemed to go on forever if you followed them with your eye.

You found the nail where she said. The key hanging there fitted nothing on the boat, and nothing on the lock either. You hung the ring back beside it anyway and shut the cupboard on the painted scrolls, and by the time you came up on deck the chamber had filled to the top and the water had found its level.
