Spiral and dot band tattoo on a wrist

Geometric · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A black ink band wraps around the wrist, made of a row of spirals and small dots framed by two thin solid lines. The linework is bold and even, with no shading, and the pattern is shown against pale skin on a plain white background. The photograph is taken from the back of the hand, with the fingers extended and a silver band ring on the index finger.

I was nine summers old that year and proud of my hand. Mother let me do the outer lines alone while she sat by the kiln, humming the song about the boatman who never came home. My first lines wobbled, so she made me scrape them and begin again. By the fourth attempt the slip had thickened and the stick moved true, and when I finished, the spirals ran around the belly of the bowl like a row of small moons waiting their turn in the sky.

The trader from across the water came for it at midsummer. He turned the bowl slowly in his hands, counted the spirals under his breath, then tapped one dot with his fingernail. Your daughter's? he asked. Mother nodded. He paid in salt and a knife with an antler handle, and said the bowl would travel further than either of us. I never learned where it went. But every spring, when the swallows came back, I walk down to the shore and draw one spiral in the wet sand, then one dot beside it, to see whether my hand has kept its line.
