Black henna mandala on hand and wrist

Geometric · Hand · Black and grey · Photo

A hand is raised against green foliage, with black henna-style patterns covering the back of the hand, the fingers and the wrist. The design uses dense mandala-like lacework, geometric bands on the fingers and rows of dots that run up the forearm. Silver and gold metallic stickers, including an om symbol on the wrist and an ornate piece on the forearm, sit alongside the black patterns.

Dear Mira,

The paste finally thickened this morning, after two days of cold on the high side of the pass. Your uncle wrapped the tin in a fleece and carried it down the switchbacks inside his coat, saying the mules had complained enough. I have spread the dots along the margin of the cloth the way you taught me, one by one, counting them aloud so the rhythm holds. Forty dots to a line, then a gap, then forty more.

The mandala is harder. It must close on itself like the bowl of a lake seen from the ridge, every petal answering the one before it. I drew the first ring three times before the lines stopped wobbling. The old women at the shrine say a pattern that does not return to its starting point will lead the wearer off the path in the dark. I do not believe that, but I still keep my edges tight.

Yesterday the postman brought nothing, and the snow took the road to the lower village. So I spent the afternoon on the lotus at the centre, petals opening outward with a stiff bristle, and I thought of you on the far side of the ridge, counting your own dots against the wind.

When the paste dries it will go nearly black. Tell the girl at the stall that the colour comes up slowly, overnight, the way a good letter does. I will send the next tin with the first coach that crosses.

Your sister, Leela
