White ink mandala on hand and wrist
Hand · Colour · Photo
A close photograph of a hand and wrist showing a white ink ornamental design. A large mandala with a flower-like centre spans the back of the hand, with a scalloped border and dotted edging, and a row of pointed teardrop motifs extends up the wrist. The white linework is fine and even against the dark backdrop, and the composition is centred on the hand.

Mind the fire, you lot, and don't reach for the last of the rum until I've done, for the frost has got into the cellar again and I won't have my story spoiled by a dry throat. Mabel Crane kept the Lantern at Scarth Pass the winter the road shut on the feast of St Lucy, and she was the only soul in the valley who could read frost on a window the way a clerk reads a ledger.

That January the panes grew a pattern overnight. There was a great round bloom at the centre of the glass, scalloped at its rim and dotted all along the edge, and from its lower curve hung little teardrops, pointed as icicles, that climbed the sill like a sleeve. Mabel scraped it with her thumbnail in the morning and it came back by dusk, neater each time, as if someone on the far side of the pane were drawing it with a fine brush.
She worked it out on the back of a tally sheet. The rings were the hollows of the Long Shelf, the teardrops the cairns that marked the safe line down to the mill. The one gap in the lace sat where the cairns stopped, and there, eight winters back, Tomas Reed had gone out with his bell-sled and his lantern and never come down. Nobody had looked hard, because the snow had been deep and the valley had its own dead to bury.
They dug at first light, four of them with shovels and a farm dog that refused to stop barking. Under three feet of drift they found the sled runners, then the brass bell, green and silent, and the lantern still hanging from its hook. That night Mabel went to bed without looking at the window. When she came down at six the glass was bare and clear, and the frost had gone back to the very spot in the valley where the bell had lain, as though something had finally been told where to stop.
