Black lace garter band on a thigh
Botanical · Thigh · Black and grey · Photo
A wide band of black lace pattern wraps around the outer thigh, with scalloped edges, scrolling tendrils, and leaf shapes filling the band. The linework is fine and the lace mesh is shaded with grey tones that give it a textured, fabric-like look. The photo is taken at a slight angle with a denim hem visible above the tattoo against a plain background.

...and that's the thing about a pattern, Tom, it wants to be finished. Ada Pennock sat up in the top loft on Stoney Street with the gas turned low, drawing the same band of leaves for the fourth night running. Below her the Lace Market slept, warehouses shut, cobbles wet, and the bells of St Mary's counted out eleven as if they had nothing better to do.

The mill had ordered a border for a bridal veil, a scalloped thing meant to wind round the frame like ivy round a gatepost. Each time she inked the tendrils they curled back on themselves, too tight, so the leaves crowded out the holes where the light was supposed to come through. Her master said a lace with no air in it is only a bandage. She knew that. She kept at it anyway, grey shading in the hollows, the mesh drawn so fine it looked like breath on a cold window.
On the fifth night a boy came up the stairs with a lamp and a cough, looked at the sheet, and said it looked like the trees on the canal path. She laughed so hard she spilt the ink. Then she left the last scallop open at the bottom, a small deliberate gap, and told him that was where the air went in.
Next morning the frame was threaded and the veil went out on the carrier's cart with its gap tucked under the hem. Nobody saw it but the boy, and he never told a soul. Thread it right, and the gap is where you breathe. Now hush, the bells are starting again.
