Lace garter tattoo on a thigh
Botanical · Thigh · Black and grey · Photo
A lace garter design wraps around the upper thigh, with scalloped lace edging and a row of stylised rose-like flowers at the centre. The linework is fine and the shading is soft, giving the lace a translucent, woven look against the skin. The image is in black and grey and is framed at mid-thigh, with a striped garment and a hand with teal nails visible at the edges.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction
Ada Pell had been pricking lace patterns in Ruddleford since the winter the mill closed, and she could tell a bad mesh by the sound it made under her thumbnail. When the girl from the Co-op asked for a garter edged in scallops, with a row of roses at the middle, Ada took the old pricking book down from the shelf and blew the dust off the cover. Her grandmother had drawn those roses in 1911 and never once sewn them.

The first week went well enough. Ada worked by the window with the bobbins clicking like a clock, and the scallops came up as neat as biscuit crumbs. Then the roses began to go wrong. Each one opened too early, its centre pulled loose, and she unpicked the same bloom three times before it sat right. Joan from next door leaned over the wall and said the pattern had a bad habit, that Grandmother Pell had burned her first attempt in the kitchen range and wept over the smoke.
On the Thursday, with the lamp low and the rain tapping, Ada turned the last page of the book and found a line in pencil under the final rose. Leave this one open, it said, for the hand that wears it to close. She sat a long while with the lace across her knees. Then she left a single rose unworked, a clean hole in the pattern, and folded the garter in tissue paper.
The girl came for it on Saturday in a coat too thin for the weather, and she held the lace up to the light as if it were a letter she had been waiting for. She did not ask about the gap. Ada threaded a blue silk thread into the open hole and tied it off, and the girl laughed as though she had been told a secret she already knew.
