Black lace-style anklet tattoo
Fine line · Ankle · Black and grey · Photo
A narrow band of black lace-like floral and scrolling motifs encircles the ankle. The linework is fine and even, with the dark ink sitting neatly on the skin. The ankle is shown against a blue canvas shoe on a wooden floor, with a textured stone wall in the background.

Ada Weller sat at the window of the cottage at the edge of Hollin Wood with forty bobbins clicking on her pillow, and she did not stop when the knock came. It was the miller's boy, sent up the lane with a coin and a folded paper. The paper asked for a band of lace, black as the rooks, narrow enough to go round a girl's ankle beneath her stockings where her mother would not see it.

She had never made black lace before. Her mother had said the thread went grey when it was dyed in the bog pools, so Ada soaked her linen in oak galls and rusted nails until it sat dark and stubborn in her hands. She pricked the pattern from a drawing of ivy and sloe leaves, and each time she set a pin she thought of the boy, how he had looked back at the wood three times before he reached the gate.
On the ninth night the thread would not hold its shape. She took a lantern out to the hedge and found the bramble had crept across her path, its tendrils curling in loops exactly like the scrolls she had drawn. She cut a length and worked it through the lace, and the pattern closed clean and tight, as if it had always been meant to be there.
The miller's girl came for it at midsummer, wearing shoes too big for her. She turned the band over in the lamplight, looked at the tangle of thorns and ink, and smiled as though she knew something Ada did not. Ada never learned who had sent the paper, only that the wood kept its hedges trimmed after that, and that the lace stayed where it was put, round an ankle, through every walk to the mill and back.
