Semicolon tattoo on an ankle

Fine line · Ankle · Black and grey · Photo

A close photograph of a bare ankle and foot in a gold textured sandal with a buckle. A small solid black semicolon sits on the side of the ankle, with clean, simple linework and no shading. The warm, sunlit tones of the skin and sandal contrast with the single dark mark, which is the clear focus of the composition.

Our proofs went out at four o'clock every Thursday, and by three the composing room smelled of hot lead and Woodbines. Dolly Kenworthy had been setting the Ossett Gazette's births column for thirty-one years and had never once let a stop wander, so when she held up a galley and said the Hartley notice was wrong, I took it for a joke. It wasn't. She had put a semicolon where the sentence wanted a full stop.

'It's the family's copy,' she said. 'Mrs Hartley wrote it herself, in pencil, and she didn't want it finished. Look.' The line read: Arthur Hartley, born at dawn on the fourteenth; mother and son both well. Dolly tapped the mark with a steel rule. 'She wanted it to go on. Things aren't done yet, love. They're held.'

I wanted to argue, but the press was waiting and the clock had its hand on the quarter. Dolly lifted the small piece of type from the case with her fingers, the way you'd lift a seed, and set it into the chase beside the comma. Its dot was the only bit of ink on the whole page that looked lonely. Nobody else in the works asked about it.

Forty years on, I still think about that stop whenever I see one on a screen, two marks stacked like a question that has decided to be patient. The Gazette ran the notice exactly as she set it. I have the cutting in my wallet, soft as cloth.
