Script lettering on both ankles in white trainers
Lettering · Ankle · Black and grey · Photo
Two legs are raised against a plain light grey background, with a small script lettering tattoo visible on each ankle. The linework is fine and the ink appears black or dark grey, with the words set above the ankle bone. The white trainers and black leggings give the frame a clean, high-contrast composition.

Dear Tom,

The rain has been coming sideways down Coopers Row since seven, and I have been stood under the awning of Pike's Hardware trying to keep the chalk dry on Mrs Adeyemi's board. Her order is for twelve signs reading FRESH EGGS, DUCKS 50P, and one that just says PLEASE CLOSE THE GATE, which she insists is for the goats. I have done the lettering the way Dad taught us, thin upstroke, heavy down, but the rain keeps smudging the tails of my Gs before they set.
Yesterday a man in a grey anorak stood at my stall for the whole afternoon without buying anything. He watched me letter a cardboard sign for the fishmonger, and when I finished he asked if I could write his daughter's name for him, Marigold, on the back of a bus ticket. He wanted it joined up, the sort of hand nobody uses anymore. I did it in pencil because my pen had frozen solid. He folded the ticket very carefully and tucked it inside his wallet as if it might blow away.
I keep thinking about the way he held it. Most people want a sign for the window or a price for the tin. Nobody comes to a market in the rain for a name written out just for them, and I found I didn't want to charge him for it.
The rain has eased now, so I'm taking the boards down before the gutter floods. Write back, even if it's only a postcard. I'll keep the chalk in my coat pocket where it stays dry.
Love, Nell
