Old Tom Pellow kept the binnacle on that ship, a brass bowl with a card spinning on its pin. Off the Azores the needle went lazy and we were three days with the sun hid behind grey cloth. Tom would not let a soul touch the bowl. He sat beside it with a stub of chalk and drew a ring on the deck planks, a circle with four short strokes inside, the points as he judged them from the swell, the gulls and the set of the cloud. The men laughed at him. Then they stopped laughing, because the chalk ring was right more often than the brass.

On the fourth morning a girl called Essie Crane came up from the hold with a face like cold porridge, swearing she could hear church bells under the hull. Tom took her to the rail and set her hand on the chalk mark. He said a ring with marks inside is only a clock that has forgotten its hours, and you keep it honest by keeping your own head level. She stood there till her teeth stopped chattering.

We raised Corvo at first light, the grey smudge of it rising out of the sea like a thumb. The deck was scrubbed clean by the watch, every trace of the ring gone under holystones and sand. Tom went down on his knees anyway and drew it again, quick and crooked, right where the wheel stands. When the mate asked why, he said a mark is for the next man who's lost, and the next man is always somebody.
