Ornate filigree chandelier tattoo on a shoulder

Fine line · Shoulder · Black and grey · Photo

The tattoo covers the shoulder and upper back with symmetrical scrolls, curls and teardrop motifs that hang in a chandelier-like arrangement. Thin black lines and fine dotted chains are combined with heavier curved strokes, giving a lace-like, filigree effect. The design is in solid black ink only, and the cropped frame shows the shoulder and part of the neck against a dark background.

Dear Ruth,

The rain has not let up since Tuesday, and the stall on Cheapside Row looks like a drowned bird. I am writing this under the awning with the ink running off the page, so forgive the smudges. Mr Abernethy's house on the hill sent down the whole drawing room chandelier last week, every crystal drop wrapped in newspaper and smelling of cigar smoke. Half the chains had snapped at the hooks. I spent three evenings sorting teardrops into tins by size.

Yesterday a woman came to the stall with a sketch folded in her glove. She wanted the same filigree in brass, scrolls curling out from a central bar like fern fronds, with little hanging drops and a chain of tiny beads looping between them. She said it had to hang the way the old lamp did in her mother's parlour, swagging low and never quite still. I told her wire that fine would not hold a drop for a season unless I doubled the strands. She laughed and said her mother had said the same thing about everything.

I finished the bracket this morning. It is not perfect; the left curl sits a hair too wide, which I will not admit to her. But when I hung it from the rafter and the rain drummed on the tin roof, every drop swung in the same slow arc, and the shadows fell across the wet cobbles like lace. I thought of you, who would have laughed at the grumbling old fool I have become.

Come and see it before Saturday. Bring the blue scarf.

Love, Tom
