Our Eli could bend copper wire into anything while he waited for the milk train. Teapots, a robin, once a lord mayor's hat that never quite sat right. He'd sit on the bench outside the signal box with his cap pushed back and his hands going, and I'd bring him tea in the dented tin cup the station master's dog had chewed.

The one he made for me was two hearts run together at the middle, each with its end curled in like a fern that hasn't decided to open. He said it was a lovers' knot, the sort you'd see on a fairground stall at Scarborough. I told him lovers had no business on the six-ten with a sack of mail. He grinned and said the two loops were for us, one going and one coming back, and the twist in the middle was where we'd meet.

The spring he signed on for the Leeds run, he left the wire on the bench. I kept it in my apron pocket for three years, flattening the kinks with my thumb whenever the platform was quiet. Every evening the six-ten came and went, and I stood there with the lamp, watching the cutting for a figure coming up the cinders.

The morning the telegram came, the wire was warm from the stove where I'd been turning it. I hung it on the nail above the ticket window, where the sun catches it at half past seven. Some mornings I still count the curls and wait for the ones that never close.
