Pink bow on a wrist
Fine line · Forearm · Colour · Photo
A small bow with a loose ribbon tail is outlined in thin black linework. The loops and tails are shaded in pink with lighter areas left unshaded to suggest a soft sheen. The bow sits centred on the inner wrist against plain skin, with a white background at the edges of the frame.

The ribbon was the only thing Marjorie Tulley's mother ever gave her that she had not handed back. It was pink satin, the width of two fingers, and it had tied the plait of every Friday in the village school for eleven years. When the school closed and the children were sent on to Garrowby, Marjorie kept it folded in her coat pocket, the way other girls kept sweets.

Thirty-one years later the old pupils met in the back room of the Plough, where the bar was sticky and the ceiling still had the hook where the Christmas lantern used to hang. They ate sausage rolls from a tray and talked about who had gone to sea and who had gone to prison and who had married the vicar's son out of spite. Nobody remembered who had cut the ribbon in half during the nativity, but everybody remembered Marjorie crying about it.
She took the ribbon out at the end of the night and asked if anyone had kept their share of the other half. A man called Dennis Parr went quiet, then went to his car and came back with a tin box that rattled. Inside, wrapped in tissue, was a length of pink satin, faded to the colour of a healing scrape. He had never known what to do with it, he said, so he had kept it, the way you keep a thing you did not mean to break.
They tied the two halves together under the hook in the ceiling, one knot each, and went home before the landlord could ask what they were doing. Marjorie wore the bow on her wrist for the rest of that winter, and when people asked, she said only that it was for remembering which way the plait went.
