Heart with swirling script lettering
Fine line · Black and grey · Flash
A black outline of a heart with a pointed tip at the bottom and a small loop beneath it. Inside, stylised script letters with curling flourishes at the top form a word that appears to read love. The linework is even and uniform, in solid black on a white background, with no shading or colour.

Sit closer to the fire, the good warmth only reaches the front of you. You want to know why a letter came over the Sorrow Gap in March, when no mule in its right mind would have been walking the pass with the snow still on the shoulders? I'll tell you, though you'll not believe the half of it.

Old Tomas Wren kept the post at the inn below the summit, and his wife Ilse wrote a hand like a cat's tail, all curls and flourishes that ran off the edge of the paper. She had not written to her brother in Varnholt for eleven years, not since the quarrel over the mill race. So one night she sat down with the good ink and a wet nib and spent hours on a single sheet. When she was done there was only one word on it, drawn inside a heart, the letters swelling and turning back on themselves at the top like ferns unrolling. Tomas read it upside down over her shoulder and laughed until he had to sit on the step.
The brother got that letter in the thaw. Nobody knows what he thought when he saw it. But he came up the pass on foot, leading his grey mare, three days in the wet, and he walked into the inn with snow in his beard and said nothing at all, only held out his hand for the pen.
And here's the thing. Beneath the heart Ilse had left a small loop of ink, a tail that ended in a bead, too heavy to fall. It's still there on the page, if you ever go to Varnholt and ask for the letter. Nobody has ever been able to wipe it away, and nobody has ever wanted to.
