Abstract heart line design
Black and grey · Flash
A single black, tapering brush line forms an abstract heart with two open loops, one on the left and one on the right, joined by a thin stroke at the centre. The linework is bold and varies in thickness, with no shading or fill. The design is shown in solid black on a plain white background with no colour.

Right, settle down, the urn's still warm and nobody leaves until I've finished, because I've waited forty-one years to tell this in front of the people it happened to. Mr Pargeter taught us penmanship in the top room of the old Board School, and he had one rule that the rest of you broke as soon as you could hold a nib. Lift the pen and you lose a mark. Lift it twice and you go to the back of the register.

Rosa Gillam, who sat by the stove and never once looked up from her desk, could draw a line from the door to the window without raising it. Nobody believed her. So one wet Thursday Pargeter dipped a steel nib in violet ink, set a clean sheet in front of her and said, draw me something you'd be sorry to lose. She drew two loops, one for the bell rope and one for the coal cart, and a stroke running down between them that curled round like a pair of cupped hands. Then she pulled the nib across the paper and it did not stop until the point of the heart had its tail tucked in the bottom corner.
Pargeter held the sheet to the window for a long time. Then he slid it into the register, folded it into his waistcoat and never told the headmaster, and never told her why. Years after, a card came to the school from Leeds with that same unbroken line on the front, and inside it said only, I still haven't lifted it.
So that's why I called you all back. The register is in the cupboard under the stage, the violet sheet still folded inside it. Go and look at the heart, then look at the person standing nearest you, and tell me if you can find where the line begins.
