The gloves had been my grandfather's, white cotton ones he wore for hauling crab pots out of Porthkennack harbour, and by the time they reached me the fingertips had gone grey and soft as old paper. I was nine when I first pulled them on for the pier crowd. The gulls took more notice of the performance than the children did, but one woman in a yellow oilskin never looked away.

Her name was Bet Carne and she crewed the Gull Rock ferry, the little boat that carried post and pasties across the channel twice a day. Every morning I made the same shape on the quay as the ferry slid out: two hands curled into a heart, knuckles pressed together, held up until the boat was past the breakwater. Every morning, from the stern, Bet lifted her own hands and made it back, badly, because she had never once managed the thumbs.

The autumn the wind came in from the west and stayed, the ferry stopped running for eleven days. I kept coming down to the quay anyway, gloves on, and made the heart at the empty water. On the twelfth morning the sea went flat and glassy, and there was the boat, coming in slow with its engine coughing. Bet stood at the rail and gave me the heart before she had even tied off. Her thumbs were still wrong. I laughed so hard I dropped one glove in the harbour, and she fished it out with a boathook and handed it back dripping, the white gone the colour of weak tea.
