Nobody in Harrow Lane would sell Agnes Pyke a bulb after the frost took the lower beds, so she walked to the sea wall with a paper bag of her late mother's seed and sat on the stones until the tide turned. A boy in a borrowed coat was throwing crusts to the gulls there. He asked what she was waiting for. She said for the water to tell her where to dig.

"It doesn't tell you," he said. "You have to go round it."
He showed her how. Starting at the edge of the garden, you walked a path that curled inward, each turn a little tighter than the last, and at every turn you set down one seed and one drop of water from your cupped hand, so the petals would know their order. Agnes thought him mad and did it anyway, because the bag was heavy and her knees were no use for anything else. The path wound in on itself like a snail's shell until she reached the middle, where she knelt and pressed the last seed into the soil with her thumb.
Nothing came up that spring. Nothing came up in summer either. In October, when she had given up and was raking leaves over the patch, the ground at the centre lifted in a tight curl, green and damp, and by the first hard frost there were rings of petals opening outward in careful order, each edge dotted with water that would not run off.
The boy never came back to the wall. Agnes kept the path swept, though, and sometimes in the early morning she counted the petals, which were always the same number, and was glad of it.
