Bare branching tree on inner wrist

Botanical · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A black ink tattoo of a leafless tree with a thick trunk and fine, spreading branches sits on the inner wrist, with two small dark leaf shapes beside it. The linework and solid black areas are crisp, and the branches taper into fine tips. The hands are shown palm up against a plain turquoise backdrop, with a thin gold ring on one finger, and the composition keeps the tattoo as the focal point.

The last of the salt carts had gone over the Coll before the snow closed the road, and the carter's boy still wanted to know why the old bare tree at the summit was not dead like everything else up there. Nan Gorrie told him to hold the mule's head and listen.

The tree had stood where the pass levelled out since before the drovers' road was cut. Its trunk was split and grey, and every branch had forked into finer and finer threads, so that in the first frost it looked like a hand thrown open to the sky. Nothing grew on it in summer. Nothing grew on it in winter either. Two leaves hung from its lowest limb, dark as wet slate, and no one had ever seen them fall.

Gorrie said the tree had once been a girl who promised the mountain her roots in exchange for a safe road for her brother's cattle. The mountain took the roots and gave the road, and she gave up her own spring to the stone. She said the two leaves were the brother's two sheep, which had come back over the pass in a blizzard when no man could find them.

The boy laughed and asked if she really believed it. She shrugged, pulled her shawl tight, and tapped the trunk twice with her knuckle before they walked on. Behind them the leaves turned a little in the wind, and one of them, the boy swore afterwards, lifted up as if to wave.
