Black line wildflower stem on upper arm

Botanical · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo

A single stem curves diagonally across the upper arm, with several blooms, leaves and a butterfly resting on one of the flower heads. The linework is dark and even, with small areas of shading in the petals and wings. The ink is solid black and the composition is open, with plenty of clear skin around the design.

Ada had the tiller in one hand and a bundle of cow parsley in the other when the lock keeper hailed her from the gate. "Tell your father the water's low," he called, "and tell him the wind's gone round to the east."

She didn't tell him anything. Her father had been dead since the thaw, and the barge Mercy was hers now, along with its debts, its cracked cabin roof and the goat that would not stay below deck. She tied off at the lower gate and walked up the towpath with the flowers still in her fist. The stems had gone limp in the sun and smelled of carrot and rain.

Halfway to the chandler's a butterfly came down off the hedge and settled on the nearest head of blossom, wings folded like a pair of cut paper hands. Ada stopped. Her father used to say a butterfly on a flower was a message from the drowned, that they wanted to know the flowers were still being picked. She had always thought it was the sort of thing a man says to stop a child crying.

The lock keeper came up the path behind her and found her standing still. He looked at the flowers, then at the butterfly, then at her, and said nothing at all. That night Ada laid the stems across the cabin table, and in the morning she untied the Mercy and let the current take her downstream, with the goat bleating behind her and the butterfly still sitting on the brightest bloom until the river bent out of sight.
