White ink mandala on black
Geometric · Black and grey · Flash
A circular mandala drawn in white ink on a black surface, built from concentric rings of petals, scrolls and dotted motifs. The linework is fine and dense, with a central lotus-like rosette surrounded by layered petal shapes and an outer scalloped border. The design is monochrome, with strong contrast between the white lines and the black ground.

You climb the last ladder with brass polish still on your fingers, because Harriet Oddie has left the lens in a state again and the inspector is due on Thursday's boat. The lamp room smells of paraffin and salt. The lens stands taller than you, a glass beehive of rings, each one cut into prisms that bend the lamp into spokes.

Harriet taught you the rings. The outer band of scalloped prisms throws the light flat across the water for far-off ships. The inner rosette holds the mantle, and the flame has to be trimmed to the width of a barleycorn. "Every petal's a little bit of the sea," she used to say, tapping the glass with a fingernail until it rang. Most of what she said sounded like a riddle until the night the fog came in and you could read the whole station from the beam alone.
Tonight the fog is back. You trim the wick, rub the glass with a chamois until it squeaks, and watch the white light break into its pattern on the black water below. Somewhere out there a trawler is feeling its way home by rings you have kept clean for thirty years, though you have never once seen the boats they guide.
At four you wind the clockwork and check that the light sweeps the rocks as it should. Then you go down to the kitchen and find Harriet's logbook open at the page where she wrote, in careful ink, "Polished. All rings true." You add your own line beneath it and leave the book open for whoever comes after.
