Black mandala tattoo on the shoulder

Dotwork · Shoulder · Black and grey · Photo

A large, symmetrical mandala with a radiating floral centre sits over the top of the shoulder and onto the upper chest. Fine lines and fine dots build layered petals and rings, with solid black accents at the outer points. The tattoo is shown in black ink against pale skin, with a dark top and a braid framing the composition.

The rosette had to be restitched before Thursday, though nobody could tell me any longer what Thursday was for. Mother Gilchrist had kept the big top's centre cloth folded in tissue for forty years, and when I lifted the first ring it came apart in my lap like wet bread, rust-brown where the dye had given up. Beneath it someone had laid out eight petals, each ringed by smaller petals, then smaller again, until the middle was a pinhole a sequin could hardly fill.

The company was down to eleven by then: two clowns who would not sit in the same caravan, a strongman who kept bees in the wagon where the lions used to be, and Tomas on the trapeze, whose hands had gone to knots. We had sold the elephants to a farm in Lincolnshire the winter before. Every night I sat under the bare bulb with a thimble and my reading glasses and counted dots, four hundred and twelve on the first petal alone, each one a black bead I had to stitch by hand because the machine kept snagging.

On the Thursday nobody came except a girl from the village, who perched on the tailboard and asked why we didn't just throw the old cloth away. I told her a pattern like that is a promise that someone meant to finish a thing. She said it looked like a flower opening from the inside. I did not tell her I had left the very centre unstitched on purpose.

We raised the big top that evening, the last time, and the cloth went up over the ring like a sun nobody had asked to set. Through the small hole in the middle the stars showed, and Tomas, climbing the rope with his knotted hands, stopped below it and looked up for a long while before he went on.
