Black mandala tattoo on the shoulder
Geometric · Shoulder · Black and grey · Photo
A dense black mandala design sits on the upper shoulder and collarbone area, built from radiating petals, concentric rings and fine dotted accents. The linework is crisp and uniform with solid areas and open patterning, and there is no colour or shading beyond the black ink. The model wears a dark loose top and her hair is in a side braid, with the frame cropped below the chin so only the tattoo and upper body are visible.

Sit closer, and mind the sheep dung by your boots, because the wind up at Coldharbour Gap has no manners. My grandmother told me this one, and she had it from a carrier who crossed the pass every week of his life with salt on his mule.

There was a widow called Nessa Harrow who kept the toll hut below the summit. Every spring, when the thaw broke the snow into rings around the boulders, she went out with a bone needle and a tin of soot ink and pricked patterns on the flat stones beside the track. Petals first, then rings within rings, then the small dots where a traveller ought to set down a coin. The carriers said she was mapping the pass. She said she was only keeping count of the winters.
Then came the year the mule-men stopped coming, because a rockfall had buried the lower road and nobody could say whether the upper one would hold. Nessa walked out alone with her needle to see. She found the stones gone under white, and in the middle of the drift, where her petals should have been, a single ring of ice had formed, clean and perfect, as if someone had drawn it with a compass.
She knelt and traced the dots with one finger, counting. Eleven. Her husband's mule had carried eleven loads over that pass before the fever took him. She stood up, and the wind dropped, and she heard bells far below, coming up the valley, slow and sure.
