Dreamcatchers and feathers on a thigh

Geometric · Thigh · Mixed · Photo

The tattoo shows two dreamcatchers with feathers and leaves, one larger and one smaller, arranged along the outer thigh. The linework is dark with soft grey shading, and the web patterns inside the hoops are finely detailed. Small turquoise dots sit at the centres of the dreamcatchers and along the leaves, and the bare leg is photographed on blue bedding.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The snow has sealed the pass for nine days, and the guests at the Hollin Inn have started sleeping badly. You hear them through the floorboards, turning over, muttering at the cold. On the tenth night you climb to the loft with a basket of goose feathers, a bundle of green willow and your grandmother's spool of waxed linen, and you sit cross-legged under the rafters until the lamp gutters low.

You bend the first hoop for the stable boy, who dreams of ships he has never seen, and knot the web inside it with a lattice fine enough to catch a moth. For the second, you use willow from the orchard gate and a broken string of glass beads from the bottom of the cook's sewing tin. Each time the thread pulls tight, you set a single blue bead at the centre, the colour of the sea on the map in the parlour. Four feathers, a few holly leaves pricked and bound with wax so they will not wilt, and both hoops are finished before the bells ring for matins.

The old man in room four asks for one on the last evening of the storm. He has spoken to no one since he arrived, but he holds the hoop up to the window and frowns at the tight web. 'Open it up,' he says. 'I want the bad ones to get through as well. I want to dream of her shouting at the kettle again.' You loosen three knots and tell him a dream needs a way out as well as a way in. He pays you in foreign coins worn smooth at the edges, and he sleeps until noon.

When the thaw comes, the road runs black with meltwater, and the smaller hoop still hangs from the beam above his bed, a single feather turning in the draught from the door. You pull the blanket up over the empty pillow and go down to the kitchen to start the fire.
