A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The miller's boy came running down the Hollin Road with word that the wood had put out a flower, and nobody in Harrow's Edge believed him until they saw it. Past the last oak, where the beeches gave way to brambles, a clearing held a cluster of peonies as big as cabbages, heavy-headed and pale as milk, and their leaves were crowded with roses that had no business growing in shade.

Old Brannoch, who kept the bees, said the blooms were a debt. Forty years before, his brother had felled the ash trees for a new mill and never asked leave of the ground. The villagers gathered at the edge of the clearing with their hats in their hands. Nobody stepped over the line of stones until Tamsin Reed, who had buried three husbands and feared nothing, knelt and pressed her palm flat to the soil.

She said nothing grand. She simply told the earth what had been taken, one name at a time, and what they would give back: a row of hawthorn, a gate kept shut against the deer, a bell rung for every child born in spring. The petals darkened as she spoke, from white to rose to a grey like pencil shading, and the buds closed one by one.

By morning the clearing was bare except for a single bloom standing in the middle of the stones. Tamsin cut it and carried it home, and it lasted on her windowsill until the first frost, soft and shaded like smoke, which is how the village knows the wood keeps its accounts.
