Mandala and scrollwork tattoo on a thigh
Fine line · Thigh · Black and grey · Photo
A large black mandala with a radiating floral centre sits on the outer thigh, linked by swirling paisley-like scrollwork and leafy stems that extend up and down the leg. The design uses clean linework with fine dotted shading in places, and the tattoo is entirely black ink. The plain skin and striped background keep the focus on the pattern.

Dear Ada,

The beck froze solid on Tuesday, and Father has had the lads chopping at the ice so the ewes can reach water. You will laugh, but I have been spending my evenings at the kitchen window, where the frost grew itself into the glass overnight. Last week it made a rosette as wide as a dinner plate, all tiny petals folding inwards to a hard white eye, and round its rim the ferns crept out in curls like the scrollwork on Mother's old shawl. By morning it had gone milky and blurred, and I was almost sorry to see it thaw.
Something else you should know. The ram, Bramble, got through the hurdle on Sunday and tore the lower gate off its hinge. Mr Pryce came up with the cart to help, and he stood in the yard turning his hat in his hands, saying the ewes would be lost in the drifts before we could mend it. Grandfather would have had it fixed in an hour with baling twine and a few well chosen words. We managed by dusk, though my palms were raw, and afterwards I sat with my back to the range, too tired to speak.
Then the thing I meant to tell you. Clearing out the loft, I found the box of Mother's embroidery silks, and under them the pattern she copied from the Kashmir shawl the Vicar's wife lent her years back. Circles inside circles, paisleys bent like shepherds' crooks, leaves sprouting from every stem. I have pinned it above my bed. Tomorrow I will start stitching it onto Father's winter blanket, one curl at a time, while the snow comes down over the barn.
Love, Nell
