Black panther head on forearm

Traditional · Forearm · Mixed · Photo

A snarling black panther head sits on the forearm close to the wrist, with yellow eyes, red accents around the nose and open mouth, and grey shading for form. Bold black outlines define the shape against the skin. Other tattoos are visible above, including what looks like a pocket watch and feathered wings.

The padlock on the postern gate had rusted through in the night, and Maud Pelling found the tracks before she found the gate. They were pressed deep into the wet mortar of the bailey, each print as wide as her palm, and they led past the broken portcullis as if whoever made them had never once looked back at the walls.

The Harrowbys had kept a black panther in the cellars of Keld Castle since the old lord brought it back from India in a crate marked glass. Her grandfather fed it raw mutton every Thursday until the estate was sold off in pieces and the cellar doors were nailed shut. Nobody had told the beast. Nobody had told the wind, either, which came through the arrow slits every evening and smelt of the sea.

She followed the prints down to the dry moat, where ivy had swallowed the drawbridge chains. The panther lay on the stone lip of the old well with its head on its forelegs, watching her with eyes the colour of marigolds. Beside it, half sunk in the moss, was a silver pocket watch, its hands stopped at a quarter past four, the same hour her grandfather had always said the cage was opened.

Maud did not run. She knelt slowly, set the watch on the wall between them, and wound it with the small key from her coat pocket until it began to tick. The panther rose, looked at the watch, then at her, and went off through the gap in the far wall without a sound. When she stood up, the gate was still open behind her, and the ticking was the only thing left in Keld that still kept time.
