Matching goat head tattoos on the hands
Traditional · Hand · Mixed · Photo
Two mirrored goat heads with curled horns, shaggy dark fur and amber eyes sit across the backs of both hands. Bold black outlines and smooth shading define the forms, with red wash behind the heads and green leaves and a bird motif visible on the wrists. The hands are photographed close up against a grey top and paving, with the tattoos filling most of the frame.

The north side of the pass is shut under snow, so the goats have come down to find you instead. Two of them, sisters by the look of their coats, with horns that curl back like the handles of a rusted gate. You have herded the Tallow flock since the spring, and you know the elder by her amber stare, the way she studies the ridge before she moves, as if the mountain owes her an answer.

Old Maud at the inn in Scarth Hollow swore the pair were born in the same hour, the winter the bridge washed out, and that a goat-headed man once walked this road with a lantern and a matched pair of knives. She said the animals remember his route. You laughed and bought her a sherry. Now, with the light going blue on the scree, the sisters stop dead beside a cairn heaped with red stones, and the elder bleats once, low, like a question.
You kneel to see what they are looking at. Under the stones is a tin lantern with a cracked glass, and beside it two blades wrapped in oilcloth, one for each hand. Your first instinct is to leave them where they lie. Your second is to remember Maud's face when she said the road keeps what it is given. You wrap the blades, light the lantern, and the goats set off down the far side without looking back, neat as a pair of dancers.
By dawn you are in the valley with the lantern still warm in your pocket. The snow has frozen hard, and the only prints are two lines of hoofmarks leading away from the pass in perfect step, each the mirror of the other, and neither of them yours.
