Black panther on upper arm

Blackwork · Upper arm · Mixed · Photo

A crouching black panther with a snarling face and bared teeth, shown in solid black ink with sharp, angular linework and white negative space. The eyes are the only colour, a small patch of green, and the body fills most of the upper arm. The background is plain skin, with a little shoulder and a sleeveless top visible at the edges.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The band had played the same waltz four times when the black cat came in through the coal chute. Nobody saw it arrive. It walked across the sprung floor of the Palais at Sowerby Bridge with its head low, and the couples parted for it the way water parts for a dropped stone. It was as big as a sheepdog. It sat down under the bandstand beside the drummer's boots and looked over the room with two green lamps.

Old Harrow, who kept the keys and swept up the cigarette ends, said the cat had come every Saturday since the war. It stayed only for those who had made promises they had no intention of keeping. Nobody believed him until Dennis Shaw, who played the double bass, went out for air after telling three different girls he would marry them. He did not come back in. The cat went out after him and the door swung shut on its tail.

In the morning Dennis was found on the bench by the bus shelter with his jacket on inside out and his bass strings cut clean through. He would not say what had passed between them. He only said the cat had looked at him the way his mother used to, when she knew exactly what he had been doing.

On the Monday Harrow mopped the dance floor and found one black hair on the bandstand step, long as a finger. He kept it in an empty tobacco tin on the shelf above the boiler. The following Saturday the band struck up again, and at midnight, when the lights went down, the caretaker stood at the gate and watched the green eyes glow in the dark street until the last bus had gone.
