Black tribal tattoo of a bear paw print above an animal head in an oval, on the upper arm.

Tribal bear paw and animal head on upper arm

Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo

A solid black tribal tattoo shows a row of five bear paw pads and claw marks above an oval design containing a snarling animal head with bared fangs. The linework uses bold black fills and open curling tribal motifs, with spirals and flowing bands filling the oval. The tattoo is black ink only, photographed close up on pale skin against a dark background.

The prints began at the postern gate, pressed deep into the mud where the rain had pooled. Marta crouched beside them with her lantern hooked on one finger and counted what the earth had kept: five round pads in a shallow arc, and above them the scored marks of claws, each as long as her thumb. Nothing had come through that gate in the eleven years she had kept the ruin for the estate. The padlock was still rusted shut. Whatever had walked here had come over the wall, and had taken its time about it.

The ledger in the gatehouse was damp and half eaten by silverfish, but the entry for the spring of 1816 was clear enough. The steward had written that the bear did not take sheep from the lower pasture, and that the castle's oath held it to the walls. Marta had always taken that for a clerk's superstition. She read it again by the stub of a candle and thought of the carved stone over the chapel door, which she had walked beneath every morning without once looking up.

She looked up that night with the lantern held high. The lintel showed a head wrapped in curling bands, jaws open, fangs worn to nubs by weather, and around it a double spiral that her fingers found sharp under the moss. The bear had not come to raid. It had come to keep the gate, and it had kept it through every winter the family had forgotten the terms. Below the carving, someone had recently scraped the moss from a patch of stone the size of a dinner plate, and the scrapes were fresh.

She left a loaf on the flagstone under the arch and went home without looking back. In the morning the bread was gone, and the prints led off through the wet grass towards the hill, five pads in their arc, each one going the same way as the last. The stone over the chapel door was clean now, every spiral sharp, as though something patient had gone over the old oath with a claw to keep its terms legible.
