Botanical ornament on a lower leg
Fine line · Calf · Black and grey · Photo
A symmetrical vertical ornament of fine black linework sits on the outer lower leg, with a dotted line running down its centre. It combines sprigs of leaves, small starburst and sun-like rosettes, and a cross-shaped motif near the base. The image is in black and white, with a plain background and a black sandal strap crossing the ankle.

The stores are thin since Lisbon. Mrs Oddie at the chandlers wants paying before she hands over another sack of barley, and I have told her the Brightwater sails on the tide regardless.

Here is what I did instead of sleeping. I copied the star chart your father pinned above the stove onto the back of the menu board, the one with the sprigs of rosemary and the little suns he drew for each port. He always said the cross at the bottom was where the cook stands, so the ship never forgets who feeds her. I ran the dotted line down the middle the way he did, so a man could follow it with his finger from the top star down to the bread knife.
Last night Mr Pell came in soaked and asked whether the chart was still true. I told him the stars don't shift for a cook's grudge, only for a man's own wrong turn. He laughed and took the lantern up on deck. This morning I found the rosettes scratched out one by one, and beside each a new sun drawn with the wrong number of points.
I have left the board on its hook for you. Count the points if you doubt me. Your loving Mam.
