Floral vine tattoo on a thigh

Botanical · Thigh · Black and grey · Photo

A black and white photograph of a thigh with a tattoo of flowers, leaves and curling vines that climbs from the lower thigh towards the upper leg. The linework is bold and dark, with some areas filled in solid and others left open against the skin. The composition shows the tattoo in sharp focus across the centre of the frame, with a hand resting on the dark fabric at the left and a bare foot at the right.

Dear Win,

The cuttings you asked for have gone into the damp corner behind the coal shed, the way Mum showed us, wrapped in wet newspaper and a bit of string. Mr Pryce from the chapel says the honeysuckle will take if it gets the north wall and nothing else. I told him he was welcome to argue with the wall himself.

Something odd happened on Tuesday. Dorothy Ames came into the shop asking for a pattern to copy onto a tea towel, and she had a sketch folded in her glove. Dog roses, she said, with the little dotted seed heads you get in September, and a vine that climbs up and around until it forgets where it started. She wanted it stitched in black thread only, no colour, because her husband says colour is for people who can afford to waste it. I sat with the sketch under the counter lamp for an hour after closing. Half the blossoms were filled solid and half were left white, as if the paper had simply been asked to hold its breath.

I drew it out properly for her on Thursday. Dorothy cried a little, then said that was foolish, and paid me in sixpences. I kept the original sketch. It is pinned above the till now, and every customer who looks at it asks where I bought the pattern. I tell them it grew up the wall at the back of the bakery, which is nearly true. Write soon, and tell me whether the honeysuckle has decided to stay.

Love, Edie
