Floral vine tattoo on a thigh
Botanical · Thigh · Black and grey · Photo
A bare leg is shown from the thigh down, with a large tattoo of flowers, buds, leaves and curling stems running up the outer thigh. The linework is dark and fairly bold, with some shading in the leaves and petals and small dotted accents scattered around the design. The photograph is black and white, and the composition is cropped to focus on the tattoo while a hand holding dark fabric sits at the left edge.

The cuttings were wrapped in damp newspaper, and the inspector had found the first one before Teodor had finished his coffee. She held it up under the strip light the way a jeweller holds a stone, turning it slowly so the buds caught the glare. "Clematis, is it?" she asked. "Or something related?" Teodor said it was a climbing stock his grandmother had grown along a wall in Ghent, and that the roots had been washed twice, once in the river and once in a bucket of bleach.

Hanne Walsh had worked the Dover lorry lanes for eleven years and knew a lie about soil when she smelled one. This was not a lie. The stems were pale and whippy, the leaves furred at the edges, and the small dotted scars where old tendrils had been snapped off sat exactly where a careful grower would leave them. She ran her thumb along a stem and felt it give, supple as wire. Behind her a lorry reversed with a long electronic bleep, and somewhere a radio played a song about a ferry that never sailed.
"It's the flowers that bother me," she said. "Nothing should look that pleased with itself in a plastic crate." Teodor laughed, too quickly, and then stopped laughing when she reached for her stamp. She pressed it twice, once on the form and once on the newspaper, and the ink bled a little into the wet print of a headline about rail strikes.
He drove off with the crate on the passenger seat. Hanne watched his lights go down the slip road and thought of her grandmother's wall in Lincolnshire, where the same kind of bloom had climbed past the bedroom window every June. That evening she unwrapped the cutting she had kept back for herself, a single stem standing in a jam jar on the windowsill, and found that a bud had opened in the warm kitchen. She did not write that down.
