Black rose and geometric lines on a forearm

Botanical · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A open rose with layered petals and three leaves sits at the top of the forearm, with the petal edges outlined in bold black and the shading built from stippled dots. Below it, fine straight lines form nested triangles and a diamond shape that tapers towards the wrist, with some dotted line work. The palette is black ink and grey tones on pale skin, set against a plain light wall and a dark top.

The pattern had been folded so many times that the rose lost its centre first. Dorothy Ashby flattened the tracing paper under a jar of marmalade and counted the dots again, because her eyes were going and nobody else in the shop had the patience. Her brother Len had drawn the nested triangles with a steel rule and a pencil sharpened down to a stub. "The diamond's for the way out," he said, tapping where the lines met. "Everything narrows to the wrist eventually."

The shop sat at the end of Freeman Street, between a chandler and a tailor who had gone bust, and smelled of machine oil and paraffin. Customers came in with ferry tickets and nervous jokes about the Channel. Len worked the needle in short bursts, stippling each petal until it darkened from the edge inward, while Dorothy kept the order book in the back: a name, a port, a date. She never asked what the roses were for. She only checked the spelling.

In March a young man came in with a passport in a plastic sleeve and asked for the design exactly as drawn, no changes. Len studied the paper a long time, then looked at Dorothy over his spectacles. She saw him decide something. He inked the leaves first, then the dotted lines down the forearm, slow as a man threading a needle in the dark, and when he wiped the skin clean the diamond pointed straight at the wrist like a compass needle that had finally found north.

The man paid in coins and thanked them both. Afterwards Dorothy found the tracing paper in the bin, reversed and pricked through with a single dot where the diamond's point should have been. She smoothed it flat, wrote the date in the book, and left the column for the port blank.
