Greek word lettering on the upper thigh

Lettering · Thigh · Black and grey · Photo

The image shows the Greek word αδελφή in black ink on pale skin, set just below the edge of a lace garment. The letters are a clean, even script with consistent line weight and a slightly soft edge, and the accent mark sits over the final letter. The ink is solid black and the composition is tightly cropped on the lettering, with the warm lace and skin tones filling the background.

Sit down, child, the wind is only warming up, and nobody drives this road after dark without hearing how the Salter sisters kept the lamp lit at the Lantern House. Eleni was the elder, and she counted every cup of water like a miser counting coins. Her younger sister Marika counted nothing, which is why the lamp was always hers to light.

One September a lorry driver brought word that the mine at Ochre Flat had shut and the men were walking the road with their boots in their hands. Marika packed a canvas bag, took the last jar of quince preserve and said she would write. Eleni stood in the doorway and said nothing, because the word she wanted was too heavy to lift. She went back inside and filled the lamp with oil.

Every month after that, Eleni wrote to the city address on the back of a feed-store calendar, always the same word across the front of the envelope in her cramped capitals: αδελφή. The postman, a man called Dimitri who could not read a line of Greek, asked her once what it meant. She told him it meant sister, and that a sister is the only address a person cannot lose. The letters came back stamped with a red line and the words no longer at this address, and she sent the next one anyway.

When the old woman died the lamp was still burning, the reservoir full to the brim. Marika drove up the road in a borrowed car and found the returned envelopes stacked in a biscuit tin, every one of them unopened, every one of them addressed to her. She sat down at the kitchen table, lifted the lamp's glass chimney and trimmed the wick, the way her sister had taught her before she ever learned to leave.
