Black swirl and cross tattoo on a finger
Hand · Black and grey · Photo
A close-up of a finger carrying a small black tattoo made of two curling scrolls and an upright cross-like motif. The linework is solid and fairly bold, with the shapes filling in as dense black ink. The design is shown in a tight crop against soft skin and a blurred background, with no colour present.

The frost had not yet lifted from the stile when your mother pressed the iron stamp into your palm and told you to mind the ferns. Beyond the last cottage at Hollin Edge the trees stood close enough that their shadows seemed to knit together, and the path up through them had not been walked since the thaw. Your task was simple enough: strike the old boundary posts with the mark so the rangers from Stannage knew where the village ended and the wood began.

The first two posts were easy. Bracken coiled up from their roots in tight curls, brown at the tips, and you pressed the stamp to the wood until the mark bit clean. The third post had no bark left on it. It was grey and split, and someone had already carved a cross into its face, deep and careful, with two scrolls curling away from the arms like the fronds you had been stepping over all morning.
You stood there longer than you meant to, your breath hanging in front of you. The stamp was heavy, and you had the odd thought that the carving was not a boundary at all but a signpost turned the wrong way round, meant for whoever came up the path expecting the village to be behind them. Then the wind moved the ferns and the scrolls seemed to turn with it, and you understood the old carver had cut them to point downhill, toward the lamps.
You struck the grey post with your own mark, a small clean square beside the cross, and started down. Halfway to the stile you looked back. The swirls were already filling with dusk, black where the light had gone, and from the cottages below came the sound of a door opened, closed, then opened again, as though someone was waiting for you to come home.
