Small elephant outline on the inner wrist

Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A small elephant facing left is drawn in a single thin black outline on the inner wrist. The linework is even and clean, with the trunk curling up and a simple tail visible. The skin is pale against a light, slightly blue-tinged background, and the tattoo is the only colour-contrasting element in the frame.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The pass closed on the Tuesday, and by Thursday there were nine of us in the back parlour of the Crook and Lantern, which is three more than the beds were built for. Mr Tolley, a rag-and-bone man from Kendal, had sat by the fire since noon with a stub of pencil and the back of a seed invoice, and he had not spoken once.

On the Friday my brother Sam, who is six and cannot be kept still by any means known to science, came in asking for a picture. Mr Tolley looked at him for a long while, then took the pencil and drew without lifting it. The line went down from the boy's knee, round and out, a small heavy animal with its trunk curled up like a question mark, facing left toward the door. "Don't break it," he said. "The line, I mean. Lift the pencil and it's just a smudge."

Sam wouldn't let anyone else touch the paper. He slept with it under his pillow, and I thought nothing of it until the Saturday morning, when the drift against the yard wall stood higher than the gate and I went out to fetch coal. There in the new snow, facing left toward the lane, ran a single unbroken track: four round prints and a long curl where a trunk had swung, pressed through the white as if something had walked it without once stepping off.

Mr Tolley had gone before dawn, the cart tracks already filling behind him. Sam still has the paper. The elephant sits in the corner, and the pencil line has nowhere to end, so it just keeps going round the edge of the page.
