Word heart tattoo on an ankle

Lettering · Ankle · Black and grey · Photo

A close photograph of an outline heart formed from repeated serif capital words, including UNITY, HOPE, FAITH and LOVE, set in black ink on the ankle and foot. The linework is solid and even with no shading, and the lettering follows the curve of the heart. The skin tone is warm and the background is softly blurred, so the tattoo is the clear focus of the composition.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Marjorie Tull had been painting shop fascias for forty years and could still feel the ache in her wrist when a letter went wrong. On the fourteenth floor of Carrow House the lift had been broken since March, so she carried her tins of enamel up the stairs, one flight at a time, and counted the landings out loud to keep her breath steady.

The residents' association wanted something for the bare wall beside the bins, something to make the place look lived in rather than left. Marjorie had sketched a heart in pencil and filled it with words she'd heard shouted across the courtyard all summer: UNITY, HOPE, FAITH, LOVE. Her brother Terry said nobody would stop to read it. She told him people read everything when they're waiting for a bus.

She worked on a Saturday with a flask of tea and the radio turned low to the football results. Serif capitals, the old way, each word squeezed to fit the curve. The hardest part was the join at the top, where the two lobes met and the words had to bend without collapsing. She put UNITY on the left lobe and HOPE on the right, and by the time she reached the point she had run out of room and had to start again, smaller.

Mrs Okafor from flat nine came down with her grandson, and the boy read it aloud slowly, stumbling over FAITH, then LOVE, and then, pleased with himself, the whole heart again from the beginning. Marjorie wiped her brush on a rag. "That's the trick," she said. "Go round again and it means more."
