Black swirl with three circular emblems on an arm
Blackwork · Other · Black and grey · Photo
The tattoo is a large black swirl or ring that wraps around three circular emblems, one with dots and a central disc, one with a star-like radial motif, and one with a concentric ring and eye-like form. The linework is solid black fill with thick, smooth edges and open areas of skin left as negative space. The image is in black ink only, with the curved composition following the shape of the arm.

The big wheel stopped with Mrs Abernathy at the top, and she refused to climb down until somebody explained the noise. Dad lay on his back under the gearbox with a torch clamped in his teeth, muttering that the pawl had cracked again. I held the lamp steady and watched the grease run black into the dust.

Nobody on the fair trusted the old Waltzer's drive plate. It had come off a showground in Lincoln, bolted to three iron discs that Dad swore were cut from a dead man's lathe, though he laughed when he said it. Two of the discs had worn smooth. The third still threw its dots and its spokes against the lamplight, the way a cat watches a moth it has decided not to catch.
Dad found the crack at last and declared it the best hour of his year. He let me tap the ring back into its race with the hammer while the wheel groaned, and the whole field held its breath until the carriages began to turn again. Mrs Abernathy waved from the top as if she were a queen on a balcony. When the lights came on across the field I saw that the grease had left a neat black ring on my forearm, and I did not wash it off until we reached the next town.
