Black and grey dotwork tattoo of the Rebel Alliance insignia and the Millennium Falcon inside a black diamond on a forearm.

Rebel insignia and Millennium Falcon on a forearm

Dotwork · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A black diamond frames the Rebel Alliance insignia at the top and the Millennium Falcon, seen from above, in the lower half. The black diamond and insignia are solid black with stippled dotwork shading, while the ship is built from lighter dotted greys and fine outlines. The design is centred on a plain, pale forearm against a dark background and a red garment.

Dear Ysolde, The wind off the Saltmarrow flats has finally dropped, so I can hold the pen steady enough to write properly. Papa's old freighter sits in the ring dock at Carrick Bay, its cracked dorsal fin propped on timber, its cockpit smelling of burnt sugar. Mistress Orla says she will fly again by the autumn tide if I keep my hands out of the coolant. I told her I have never kept my hands out of anything in my life.

Something happened on Tuesday that I have not told Mother. A courier came over from the hill fort at Veyle with a sealed tin, and inside, folded in oilcloth, was an old rebel emblem: a black diamond with the three-petalled sigil at its heart, the one the Wardens painted on their gates before the Lord Chancellor had them scraped clean. Orla went very quiet. She took a stippling pen from her drawer and began pricking tiny dots onto a scrap of card, slow as rain on a slate roof, and said the first Wardens shaded their badges that way so the light would never give them away.

Then she drew the ship. Not our freighter, but the ghost of a finer one, the round hull seen from directly above, spokes of decking running out from a single ringed hatch, two stubby wings like a pair of folded knives. She shaded the hull in greys so fine I had to squint, and set it low beneath the emblem, where the diamond's point holds it like a hand holding a lantern. Orla said every crew needs a ship and a cause, and most only ever get one.

I am sending you the card so you can see it. I have pinned it above my bunk. Tell Mother the freighter will be ready before the tide, and that I am not, under any circumstances, going to Veyle. Write back soon, and do not show this to Father's cousin, who still thinks the Wardens are a children's story.
