Globe with clouds on an upper arm

Dotwork · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo

A circular globe shows the Americas as solid black landmasses against a stippled dotwork shade that fills the rest of the sphere. Two outlined clouds sit on either side of the globe, drawn in fine black line with no shading. The photo is taken close up on an upper arm against a brick wall, with a white sleeve at the top of the frame.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

You learn a ship by its noises before you learn her names. Forty-one days out from Callao, the cargo hold ticks as it cools, and the chart room at the top of the stairs is the only place with a lamp still lit. Old Haskins keeps a brass globe there, scuffed bare at the equator, and he spins it with two fingers whenever the sea gets into his head.

"Look," he says, and presses his thumb on the black shape of the Americas. "Solid. Everything you can name is in there. Now look at the rest." The rest is ocean, the dark stippled kind the engraver used for depth, and it covers far more of the world than you'd guess. You had always thought of the sea as the gap between places. Haskins thinks of the land as the gap between seas.

He taps two outlined clouds drawn on either side of the sphere, a pair of puffs a child might sketch. "Those are the only things on this chart that cross borders without asking. Weather doesn't carry a passport. Neither do I, not properly." You nod, though you don't follow him.

On the next watch you take the chart pencil and draw a small cloud over the blank water south of the Galápagos, the way he taught you to mark a sighting. In the morning it's still there. Beside it, in Haskins's cramped capitals, someone has written: WHEN LAND, TELL ME FIRST.
