Black symbol tattoos across clasped fingers

Hand · Black and grey · Photo

Hands are clasped together with the fingers facing the camera, and each visible finger carries a small black symbol tattoo made of straight lines, triangles, arrows and cross-like marks. The linework is bold and uneven, with no shading, and the ink is solid black. The dark background keeps the focus on the hands, and a plain gold ring sits on one finger.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

At the reunion in Stainforth the old pupils sat at trestle tables under the paper chains, and nobody had yet said the thing they had come to say. Mary Quayle had kept the school register for thirty years after the headmaster went blind. Every child who had ever been strapped, sent home or forgiven was written there in her small square hand, and beside each name she had drawn a mark.

They say the marks were a kind of promise. Mary would hold a child's hand across the desk and draw a cross or an arrow on the finger in ink from the blue bottle, and the child would walk home and not fear the dark for a year. When the year was up the mark would sting, and they came back to her, and she drew another. Nobody thought it strange. It was the sort of thing a school did.

Tom Harle arrived in a clean shirt, turning a wedding ring round and round. When the clock struck nine he stood up and said he had been given a mark he had never asked for, and that the arrow on his finger pointed at the door. Mary's sister Ada put her hands together under the table and laughed until she coughed.

Mary had died in March. The register had been left on the piano, and when they opened it the last page was blank except for one line in her hand: go back to the place where you were first marked. So they went, in the rain, one by one, to the gate of the old school, and the marks stopped itching.
