Two hands with black script initial tattoos on the fingers, each finger wrapped in a green striped band, shown in a lettering style on the hand.

Script initial finger bands on two hands

Lettering · Hand · Mixed · Photo

Two hands rest on a textured green and brown fabric, with a black script initial on the middle finger of the left hand and another on the ring finger of the right hand. Each letter sits within a band of dark green lines that wraps around the finger, like a ring. The ink is crisp with solid black lettering and muted green shading, and the close framing keeps the fingers and tattoos as the focus.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Nell had been mending the Harrowgate blankets for thirty-one winters, and she knew most of the hands that had ever tugged a loose thread from one. So when the carrier brought a grey wool bundle up from the Cardew farm with two unfamiliar initials stitched inside the hem, she sat down on the low stool by the stove before she unfolded it.

The letters were worked in black silk, looped and curled the way the old schoolmaster wrote them, an M on one corner and a C on the other. Someone had bound each letter with a band of dark green thread, wound close and tight, the way you would wrap a wet cord to stop it fraying. Nell had seen plenty of marriage blankets come through her hands, but never ones where the green looked so much like moss creeping over a wall.

She found the answer folded into the bundle: a note, damp at one edge, in a hand that had given up on capitals. 'Mabel has the green dye from the pass now. Tell Cardew I will not wear his ring but I will wear his thread, if the weather holds for the crossing.' Nell read it twice and laughed, because she recognised the stubbornness.

She sent the bundle back with the carrier the next morning, reinforcing the hem with three careful stitches so the letters would not come loose on the climb. Then she wrote her own note and tucked it under the green band: the blanket was done, the thread would hold, and the pass was clear until Thursday.
