Minimal black symbols on the hands

Fine line · Hand · Black and grey · Photo

Two small black tattoos sit on the sides of two hands pressed together. The left design is a circle with loops and crossing lines that resemble a knot or tied cord, and the right is a vertical bar with a circle and a horizontal stroke that forms a simple symbol. The linework is clean and uniform with no shading, and the plain light background keeps the focus on the ink.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The mule had gone lame above the Col of Ardrach, so Ilse tied the last of the pack herself, working the cord the way her father had taught her: a loop, a turn through, and the long tail doubled back under. Snow was coming off the ridge in thin ribbons. Her brother Tomas stood at the gate of the hut with the iron bar in his hands, waiting for her to finish so he could lock it before dark.

The hut had one door and one hasp, and the hasp had been bent since the winter the bridge went. Tomas had never trusted the old bolt. He fitted the bar through the ring, dropped the pin, and tapped it home with a river stone. 'It will hold,' he said. 'It held for Father.' Ilse didn't answer. She was counting the packs, and the knot had come out cleaner than she expected.

They went in as the light went. Inside, the stove ticked and the wind worked at the shutters, and neither of them spoke about the mule. Ilse sat by the fire and unwound the spare cord from her wrist, the way she always did when she was thinking, and laid it across her knees in two neat loops.

At first light the pass was white and clean. Tomas lifted the bar, looked at the knot she had tied, and laughed for the first time in a week. 'You always leave one end loose,' he said. 'So someone can pull you back.' She put the cord away without a word, but she left the end hanging.
