Fish symbol with nail on an ankle

Ankle · Black and grey · Photo

A close view of a foot showing a black outline tattoo of a fish symbol with a nail crossing through its upper left edge. The linework is a single even outline with light grey shading inside the nail, and the fish is left mostly unshaded against the skin. The tattoo sits centrally on the image with plain skin around it and soft, even lighting.

Tom Pargeter kept a forge in the yard behind this house, where the sea wind came under the door and set the bellows going on their own. The night the Brindle Hope came limping into the harbour with her planks sprung, he worked until his palms split, making nails by lamplight while the crew knelt in the wet at the harbour wall and waited for the tide to turn. Every nail he drove that night came out of the fire crooked, or sprang loose in the wood, and he cursed each one, and the wind kept coming.

Near dawn he drove the last nail into the stern plank. It bent flat under the hammer and held anyway. The skipper swore it was the only thing in the boat that didn't give way. Tom pulled the bent one out afterwards and set it on the windowsill, and his wife, who had a steady hand with a pencil, drew a fish on the whitewash beside it, the same old sign her mother had chalked on every door in the town.

Forty years on, the nail is still on that sill, the fish has been painted over three times, and nobody in this house has ever once thrown anything away.
